our story

baked fresh daily since the nineties! We’re the oldest eatery in town serving you quality goods 363 days a year →

driven by good coffee, quality food, and dedicated people.

  • Our commitment to supporting our local farmers & economy earned us a Hawai’i Green Business Certificate! We often source ingredients from our own staff’s gardens, neighbor’s backyards, and small businesses on the north shore.

Our coffee is organic, fair trade certified, and roasted down the road by Outpost Coffee Kauai. Our tea from Hobbs, a Kauai company, is grown all over Hawai’i. Our poi (taro) comes from Hanalei Poi Company, salad greens from Ho’ala Mala Farms in Kapa’a, rum from Hanalei Spirits Distillery made in Kilauea, fruits & veggies from various local farms, ulu from both farmers and friends with much to spare — the list goes on!

  • You may have noticed our outdoor used library — did you know we’ve raised nearly $100,000 for our local elementary school? With the help from book donations, cool people volunteering to keep it neat and color-coded, and our honor system cash box, we’ve been able to drop wads of cash off to Kilauea Elementary School. That’s pretty cool.

Kilauea Bakery works with Kilauea Elementary School and Kauai Christian Academy to award every class’s student of the week a slice of cheese pizza or a cookie. That’s about 120 items donated per school month. Also pretty cool.

We are so grateful and proud to be able to give back to our community. Kilauea Bakery donates thousands to select organizations and causes every year, with a focus on Kauai’s youth and Kilauea based fundraisers and non-profits.

  • Our recipes and methods are time tested, 35 years to be exact. In a world of fleeting trends and specials, we have stayed true to ourselves and honed our craft. Consistency is key after all, and luckily, you all don’t seem to be sick of us just yet.

We heard something once from a small one-man bakery in Italy — “The life of a baker is a beautiful life.” A pastry is a privilege, a work of art and a labor of love.

Can we hear a little commotion for local bakeries everywhere? In fact, go take a walk to your local bakery and buy a loaf, you may or may not meet your soulmate, but you will get some real good bread.

Kilauea Bakery & Pau Hana Pizza began in 1991 when the Picketts took two old plantation houses, pushed them together, closed in the back porch for kitchen space, and started baking. What began in just half the building you see today slowly grew into something much bigger than a little makeshift bakehouse. We have them to thank for the recipes and techniques we still use today, the staff who stuck with us, and the regulars who gave us a chance.

In 2021, after 30 years, the bakery was passed on to local Sami Livé and her father, Gerald. Today Sami runs the day-to-day alongside her right-hand G.M. Chas, her mom Tima, and a team of 40 incredible humans who keep things moving from 4am to 9pm,every single day.

Thanks for sticking with us while we continue to grow and evolve. The bakery might look a little different these days, but there’s nothing quite like being taken back in time with the same pastry you had 35 years ago. We’re just trying to keep that feeling alive.
